How does one describe New York City's first all-glass office building? Mid-century design begins here. Completed in 1952, The Lever House marks the highest standard in the mid-century modern era. This public, open air design is the forefront to the dawn of mid-century architecture. The plaza feels ageless. With trees, the open-airiness can be felt. The right angles, from glass connections to steel, beam in sunshine, snow, fog, rain, or night. Even as the cityscape evolves around Park Ave, it epitomizes its own style. Maybe I am biased. This structure will forever be my favorite building in NYC.
I was walking along Park Ave today as we often do and I paused for a while at this building. A modernistic structure with a large open space at street level. There are two contemporary sculptures ( a red garden tool and one other) in this open space and another one (a giant saw) in the building lobby. Pretty interesting.
Iconic modernist building on Park Avenue designed by Gordon Bunshaft (1909-1990) of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Completed in 1952, it was one of the first modern high rises on Park Avenue. It's diagonally across from Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building, which makes the intersection of 53rd Street and Park Avenue truly iconic indeed. Two temporary sculptures by Claes Oldenburg (1929-2022) grace the courtyard.
Designed by SOM (Gorden Bunshaft) in 1958. It stood out along Park Ave for its simple but powerful architectural gesture: a tower on a slab. It is one of the precursors of the building resolution in 1961, which replaced setback rules with FAR (floor-area-ratio).
Thinning hair was a confidence killer. Their volumizing Botox formula added thickness without bulk. Now my hair looks fuller—Manhattan’s best for natural restoration.
