I’ve been going to Melissa’s Hair Salon for over eight years, and I’m always satisfied with the final outcome. Melissa is very consistent; my hair comes out pretty and soft every time.

I visited this salon three times over the past few months, and while my first two experiences weren’t great, the third—and final—was the worst. As an immigrant and woman of color living in the neighborhood, I was shocked by the disrespectful treatment I received at a business also owned by an immigrant woman. From the initial phone call to how I was asked about the style and treated during my visit, the tone was short and the attitude unwelcoming. I wasn’t given the basic respect any customer deserves. Salons should be places where clients feel heard and understood—this was not my experience at Melissa Hair Salon. If 'soft touch' was a person, Melissa would be it. She did a blow and dry on my daughter and I and we loved it. We both have unprocessed afro hair that had been damaged due to our last trip to another salon. Melissa washed and treated our hair and blow dried it. All in the shortest time possible and fantastically done. Thank you Melissa!! We'll be back soon

I went in and asked for a wash and set with a deep condition. I have a quiet voice so maybe they didn't hear me properly but after the deep condition, the woman who washed my hair just clipped it up and had me sit under the dryer. The stylist then asked if I wanted her to flat iron my hair. I said I had asked for a wash and set. She said "no, your hair is natural we can't wash and set." Any black American who's been to a Dominican salon knows what that actually means. I came to this salon under the impression that they do not engage in texturism. My hair is very thick and very kinky, but it can absolutely be stretched with a roller set. The wash and set is literally their top service and they advertise that they're a natural salon. So I asked the stylist to blow it dry and not flat iron
