Got a great haircut from Chika. She helped me to choose one from the reference photos I showed that I thought were identical, but she spotted some differences and explained to me. She was also very thorough while making my haircut. Highly recommend! They also have a bathroom for customers.
I’ve been coming here for 3+ years to get my hair trimmed and my roots done by Kumi, and it’s always nothing short of amazing. What I love most about this space is the vibe — it’s calm and chill, not your typical loud, chaotic salon. They play vibey, chill music, they’re not overly chatty, and they really let the hours-long process feel zen. Kumi gives the best haircuts, beautiful color, and truly the best shampoos. The owner, Junya, is also incredibly kind. There’s a reason this place has 100+ five-star reviews — it’s truly a hidden gem in NYC. I genuinely love this place.
If you have Asian hair and are looking for a no-fuss, SKILLED, lived in cut that looks good right out the chair and while growing out, this is the place. Everyone there is super sweet, detail oriented, and good at interpreting the most obtuse inspo descriptions. I’ve been coming here for almost 4 years after bouncing around other highly rated japanese salons. And I’m pretty sure I’ve gotten cuts by everyone on the team at this point. Yama never disappoints. Booking process is super easy, the rate is pricey, but I feel worth it for 3+ months of good hair days!
I hate to write a negative review because Junya is such a caring and hardworking stylist, and I’d still happily go back for haircuts, but I would not trust him with digital perming again. At my appointment, I showed him a reference picture of my own hair digitally permed by a trusted stylist (unfortunately not in NYC) and asked Junya to recreate the same look. Junya said he wanted me to try a bigger rod size than what my trusted stylist used to achieve a more fashion-forward look. I blame myself for agreeing to this change (I figured Junya would know what he was doing), which turned out to be a big mistake. My natural hair is very thick and straight, and cannot hold on to large curls (my trusted stylist pointed this out when I was finally able to see him). What’s worse, neither the permi
Junya has been my favorite hairdresser of my life! He is supremely talented, thoughtful and detailed. He is also kind, and pleasant to work with. My haircuts are always beautiful, but even more, they grow out and continue to look great for months because of the way he cuts. The studio itself is very cute, and in a great neighborhood.
